Backup power, ready before the outage.
When a Sudbury storm takes the grid down, the generator either starts — or it doesn’t exist. NCP Electrical installs standby generators and portable hookups across Greater Sudbury: sized to what matters, wired with a proper transfer switch, signed off with ESA.

What we handle
From “what size?” to first outage
Standby generators
Automatic backup that starts itself when the power drops — heat, water and the essentials stay on whether you’re home or not.
02 / 04Transfer switches & interlocks
The safe, legal connection between generator and panel — no backfeeding, no cords through windows, no grey areas.
03 / 04Portable generator hookups
Already own a portable? An inlet and interlock turns it into plug-in backup for the circuits you care about.
04 / 04Sizing & panel work
Essentials-only or whole-home — we scope the load honestly and handle any panel work needed to support it.
How it works
Scoped honestly. Installed properly.
- 1 Tell us what has to stay on when the power goes out — and whether you’re thinking standby or portable.
- 2 We scope the load, recommend a size, and send a clear written quote. Fair pricing, no surprises.
- 3 Clean install with a proper transfer switch, ESA inspection handled, and a walkthrough so you know exactly how it behaves.
Common questions
Backup power questions
01 Standby or portable — which do I need?
A standby generator starts itself when the power drops and runs the circuits you’ve chosen automatically. A portable is cheaper but manual — you wheel it out, connect it, and manage fuel. We’ll talk through how often you lose power and what has to stay on, and quote the option that actually fits.
02 What size generator do I need?
It comes down to what has to stay running — heat, well pump, sump, fridge, medical equipment — versus powering the whole home. We scope that with you and size the unit and circuits in the quote, so you’re not paying for capacity you’ll never use.
03 Do I really need a transfer switch?
Yes. A transfer switch (or interlock for portables) is what lets a generator feed your panel safely and legally — it prevents backfeeding the grid, which is dangerous for you and for hydro crews. It’s a code requirement, and we install it as part of every hookup.
04 Can you hook up a portable generator I already own?
Yes — a proper inlet and interlock or transfer switch turns a portable into a safe, plug-in backup for the essentials. No extension cords through windows.
05 Is the installation inspected?
Yes — generator and transfer-switch work is notified to ESA and inspected. We handle that side on every job, so it’s documented and up to code.
